Speedo is delighted to be working in partnership with Sporta; we share a passion for sport and promoting healthier lifestyles.

At Speedo our purpose is simple – we’re passionate about swimming and want everyone to feel confident in and around the water.  Whether it’s learning to swim, having a splash around with the family or focussing on improving technique and fitness, as the experts in swim we have a wide range of products and services that support every need. We’re committed to making our products responsibly, with consideration and respect for people and the environment. Corporate responsibility (CR) is a core part of our business strategy, and every member of our team has a role to play in helping us be responsible. We raise awareness about CR through regular training sessions, an annual ‘CR Day’ and resources on our intranet site. We prioritise four key areas: product sustainability, the environment, ethical trade, and supporting charities and supporting charities and communities.

Speedo’s History

The legacy left by Speedo founder Alexander MacRae is an impressive one. Originally hailing from the Western Highlands of Scotland MacRae moved to Sydney, Australia in 1910. It was from here that he would launch MacRae Hosiery which would go on to expand into the world of swimwear. Speedo as a brand emerged from MacRae hosiery in 1928; the year the figure-hugging Racerback costume was launched, an innovation that reduced drag and changed the way people thought about swim wear. That same year, a staff slogan contest produced the legendary ‘Speed on in your Speedos’. It was a line taken seriously by Swedish swimmer Arne Borg a year later as he sported Speedo while setting a new world record: the first of many for the brand. While times were changing and attitudes ever more liberal, Australian Claire Dennis still caused controversy in 1932 when picking up gold in the 200m breaststroke in Los Angeles. Her Speedo swimsuit was said to ‘show too much shoulder’. Four years on, a bare-chested swimming shorts design for men again was also seen as daring. MacRae passed away in 1938, but his creation continued to grow ever stronger. Having put its resources into the war effort of World War II, when business resumed it soon became all about the bikini, with a new factory being opened to cope with demand. Not that everyone was a fan – the Speedo bikini was at one point banned by Australian beach inspectors. The USA and European markets were next on the Speedo hit list. They began exporting to the States in 1959, and that same year they bought a 30% share of Robert Shaw and Company Ltd in Nottingham, the city that is the home to Speedo’s global headquarters today. Expansion out of the pool reflected the success in it. In Mexico in 1968, 27 of the 29 gold medallists wore Speedo, in Munch in 1972, 52 of the 58 nations competing also wore Speedo and going one step further in Montreal 1976 the brand was official swimwear licenser providing 52 of the 54 countries with their swimsuits. The Fastskin suit took things to a new level with its launch in 2000, helping swimmers to break 13 world records at the Sydney Olympic Games. In total, 83% of all medals won by swimmers were done so wearing the Fastskin suit. Also aware of the latest trends, for its 75th anniversary in 2003, fashion designer Melissa Odabash was commissioned to create a limited edition collection that was modelled by the likes of Jerry Hall, Naomi Campbell and Yasmin Le Bon.

Today, Speedo has over 100 sponsored athletes on the roster and is the go to brand for swimming. The latest LXR Racer X launched in 2015 - a suit which has been designed through working with 330 athletes and 20 swimming experts from 26 countries around the world.
