sporta responds to free swimming cut

Craig McAteer, Chair of sporta, which represents more than 900 leisure centres around the country, said he was disappointed that the group had not been consulted about how the funding for free swimming should be cut.

“We have only been given six weeks to put this in place,” he said.  “The funding ends after the first week of the summer holiday and is likely to mean school children and their parents will be confused about what they are, or aren’t, entitled to.”

The sudden funding cut will result in significant administration work for leisure centres currently offering free swimming to under 16s and/or over 60s, as well as increased costs to reprint marketing material.

sporta represents 109 leisure and cultural trusts across the UK.  Its members manage more than 920 sites on behalf of local authorities, have a combined annual turnover of more than £625 million and attract more than 210 million visits each year.
